At this time I have decided to pursue more long-term career objectives and personal goals. Please accept this letter as my formal resignation from my position as Technical Partner/EMT in the Emergency Department, effective April 17, 2009.

My time at thsi hospital has been well spent; I have acquired many new skills and learned a great deal. My memories of the Emergency Department, the staff, and the patients we serve are all positive and will be missed. The department has treated me well, the management team has been wonderful, and the experience has been unforgettable. Hopefully our paths will cross again, but for the meantime I wish the hospital, the department, and all the staff the best.

My efforts until my end date will be to help the department find/train my replacement, continue serving the hospital and our patients, and to fulfill my resignation obligations. I am happy to answer any questions regarding my employment or resignation, and to help in whatever way possible to make this a smooth transition.

Thank you,

Ryan Bernal
Technical Partner/EMT
Emergency Department

Five Days Per Week: Excessive

It's been quite some time since the last post, and let me assure you that lack of posts was not due to the inconvenience most know too well: work. On the contrair, the lack of posts was largely due to excessive living.

Excessive is an interesting word. Often, and unfortunately, negatively connotated, the word describes situations we as a society would generally frown upon--excessive eating, excessive spending, excessive affection, etc. Let's remember, however, excessive budgets, excessive time-off, excessive free time are all excessives we (most) desire.

Seven days in a week. Five are considered "work-days". Two are considered week-ends (the name in itself is a lie because in all reality Saturday is the weekend and Sunday is the week begin). 71% of our weeks are spent working. 71%! That's excessive.

What world have we as a society created? Why do we need to spend 71% of our time at work? Are our social lives so boring and inadequate? Or is it that our socio-economic state is dictacted by supply and demand to the point that we feel compelled (or is it forced?) to work for 71% of the time? or perhaps, as it seems most employers justify, 71% of our time is required because people are productive for 30% of the total time spent at work, which would imply the extra time alotment is for time spent dallying. Scam?

Five days per week is excessive. Productivity could be increased with motivation; the solution is not adding more hours in the workplace, but finding ways to be less excessive with futile hours at work and more excessive with helping people enjoy their lives, motivating them to work harder when at work, and allowing them to spend--would 51% be too much to ask?--at their leisure.

Two Weeks Notice

It's an interesting thing resigning from a position. For starters, when you hand over the two week notice to your boss, they kind of look at you like you're the biggest let down ever. Ironically, when lay-offs come around, they'll stab you in the back faster than you can say "ouch!" and leave you high and dry claiming they had nothing to do with it. In some cases managers will go the extra mile and lie to your face claiming they had "no idea that this was happening". To all you managers out there, simply put, that is a terrible lie. Even the top guns of Lying 501 couldn't pull that off successfully.

Two weeks notice. That's what employees do. Employees give the company a friendly two weeks notice. And, from my own research, I have found that a two weeks notice letter can be held against you in court. So if you are writing a two weeks notice...be careful.

Since my new profession is living, I've taken my two weeks notice to a whole new level. Rather than try to finish up all my work (which I will admit I tried but decided was not possible) I'm using sick days. I come in late, hours late. I leave early, hours early. I go to work with a Bartleby mentality and bum-like fashion.

Four business days left until I am completely Living as a Profession.

Today I am going to live.
